My Visit to Fenton’s Creamery

Remember the ice cream parlor that Russell mentions eating Butter Brickle with his Dad in Up? It’s called Fenton’s Creamery, it’s in Oakland, California, and my wife and I went there last week. Pete Doctor couldn’t have found a better establishment to promote in his film, because its been a family owned business for 115 years, and has the best ice cream in the world.

My wife and I had been planning a vacation to San Francisco when we saw Up (3 times), and when I found out that Fenton’s was real and that it was going to be close to us, I knew we had to go.
It’s actually a very busy place. The first time we went was during lunch, but we still had to wait in line for a while to get a seat, and the place was packed. We split a meal and each poured over the ice cream menu forever until we decided on our flavors. Fenton’s makes all their flavors from scratch, and they put Ben & Jerry’s to shame. Finally we settled on flavors and ordered.

They also have many large, crazy sundaes that can feed multiple people, as well as other standard ice cream fare. We liked it so much that we went back the next day, because we knew we were going to be in the area again. If you’re ever in San Francisco, it is definitely worth the trip across the Bay Bridge to try it, and if you live there, you’re very lucky!
Here is a video I found that shows Fenton’s in Oakland and discusses how they were featured in Up.
I’ll be posting a couple more things that are Pixar-related from our vacation today, because we all know what else is close to San Francisco.

Oh wow, that is some amazing-looking ice cream. I have got to visit this place with the kids.
But wait, they didn’t have Butter Brickle?!?

They did! I’m just a chocolate fiend and my wife is a berry fiend, so we didn’t get to try it. I should have asked for a sample though.

I went to SFO a couple years ago to visit my uncle. He had to work most of the days and so i didn’t have transportation other than lots of walking, so I didn’t make it to Fenton’s nor the Pixar gate (we did get to see Ratatouille there though. I relish the fact that it was made jusy miles from where I saw it).
Next time I go back I’m definately gonna have to bug my uncle to go, or rent a car cause I can do that now.
